Pro Spotlight: Dapper Man London
At Omnilux, we’re proud to be the LED brand most trusted and used by skincare professionals worldwide. Our devices can be found in over 5,000 dermatology and aesthetic clinics across the globe, and each month our team gets to chat with one of our valued Omnilux providers to learn more about their practice and how they integrate Omnilux into their treatment offerings. This month, we had the pleasure of interviewing the men’s grooming experts over at Dapper Man London.Combining old-school barbering techniques with contemporary hairdressing, Dapper Man London is a New South Wales go-to for the freshest of fades. But this cozy joint isn’t just any barbershop - it’s also a hybrid skincare clinic offering luxurious red light therapy facials with the Omnilux Medical professional unit (perfect for calming the skin after a nice shave!). We caught up with Dapper Man London facialist, Jessica Gomes, to learn more about the unique barbershop she runs alongside her husband, and her tips for treating male skin.
Q: Dapperman London is a barbershop, what gave you the idea of introducing LED treatments as a part of your offerings?
Jessica: I think introducing Omnilux LED treatments in a barbershop is a fantastic idea. Omnilux is a form of light therapy that uses different colored LED lights to target specific skin concerns, such as acne, wrinkles, and age spots. This can be especially helpful for those who want to take care of their skin while getting their haircut or beard shaved. Plus, it's a unique service that not many barbershops offer, so it sets our business apart from others in the area.
Q. There has been an uptick in men’s grooming and skincare, what do you think is the driving force behind this change?
Jessica: The increase in men's grooming and skincare can be attributed to a few different factors. Firstly, there is a growing trend towards self-care among men, which includes taking care of their skin. Additionally, the rise of social media has made it easier for men to access information about skincare and grooming, and has also created a space where it's more acceptable for men to take care of their appearance. Finally, the beauty industry has recognized this trend and has begun marketing products specifically to men, making them more readily available and appealing to a wider market. All of these factors have been combined to create a cultural shift toward greater awareness and acceptance of men's personal grooming and self-care.
Q. What are some of your favorite tips and tricks for maintaining well-groomed facial hair? Even though LED cannot penetrate through hair – is there a benefit to using LED therapy for someone with a beard?
Jessica: Here are some of our tips and tricks for maintaining well-groomed facial hair:
- Use beard oil or balm regularly to keep the hair hydrated and prevent dryness and itchiness.
- Trim regularly to keep the beard looking neat, and use a specialized trimmer or scissors to avoid mishaps.
- Comb or brush the beard regularly to prevent tangling.
- Use a good quality shampoo and conditioner formulated for beards to keep it clean and soft.
- Avoid over washing which could dry your skin and facial hair.
- If you are using a razor to shave the beard, use shaving cream along with it, this makes the process smoother and helps avoid nicks and cuts.
- Use a boar-bristle brush for coarse beard hair - this will get deep into your hair and exfoliate your skin.
- Remember, the key to maintaining a well-groomed beard is to be consistent with your grooming regime and to keep experimenting with different techniques until you find what works for you.
Jessica: There are many benefits to using LED therapy for someone with a beard. LED therapy is a non-invasive treatment that uses different colored LED lights to target specific skin concerns, such as reducing acne, fine lines, and wrinkles. It can stimulate the production of collagen, which can help to improve skin texture and reduce the appearance of pores.
For men with facial hair, LED therapy can still be effective. The light can penetrate through the hair to reach the skin beneath and can still provide the desired results. It's recommended to use specific protective goggles to protect the client's eyes during the treatment.
However, if the beard is long enough to block the light from reaching the skin entirely, then the treatment might not be as effective. That's why it is often preferred to shave the beard before the treatment, if possible.
